Why do we use plastic?

Plastic is found everywhere in our daily life for many reasons. It’s a strong, durable, lightweight, and versatile material that can be used for almost anything. But traditional plastic also has downsides. Most of all perhaps the fact that the raw material used is oil and gas. Non-renewable resources that the planet will eventually run out of. In recent years, the development of bioplastics has for this very reason accelerated and is now at a level where brands and manufacturers are switching over to it.

What is PLA?

PLA (polylactic acid) plastic is made from renewable sources like corn, cassava, sugar beet and sugar cane. All plant-based, renewable resources and in many cases it is the bi-products in food-production of these plants that is used to create the polylactic acid that then becomes PLA.

The number one advantage of this process is that it is good for our climate. The carbon emissions associated with PLA production is significantly lower than that of traditional plastic. Every time you choose a PLA product over a traditional plastic one, you are reducing your carbon footprint and helping in the cause to reduce global warming.

Is PLA safe?

PLA is non-toxic in its very origin and can be used for lots of different things, including products for children and food contact – product categories that have very high safety demands.

At Elodie we are using PLA to create safe and sustainably produced items that make life with children even more beautiful. Discover our range and find your favourites below.
